What is Yoga Therapy

What is Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy is a process of working one-on-one with a client using yogic techniques to address specific conditions.

Through an individualized, tailored and adaptable approach process, yoga therapy clients are educated on how techniques such as movement, breathing, and meditation and philosophy can support their overall well-being. Yoga therapy can help with both physical and mental conditions such as anxiety, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, depression and endometriosis. Yoga therapy doesn’t require that a client have prior experience with yoga. And, unlike a typical yoga class, yoga therapy requires a commitment from the client to engage with the techniques recommended by their yoga therapist on their own at home. Yoga therapy complements western medicine and modalities and can provide clients another path to understanding and healing.

Below are some frequently asked questions about yoga therapy!

I am already in talk therapy. How is yoga therapy different?

Yoga therapy is both different from and complementary to western talk therapy. In yoga therapy, we will chat about what’s going on (you’re encouraged to share whatever you’re comfortable sharing and nothing more) AND explore practices such as movement, breathing and meditation to support you. It is different from western talk therapy for this reason.

What if I am struggling with multiple things? Will yoga therapy be able to support me with all my conditions?

Possibly! In your first meeting, we will chat about what’s most pressing to you and begin there. You may experience relief with other conditions as a result of the first set of practices. If not, we will layer on practices slowly and gently.

How long does someone typically work with a yoga therapist?

The length of engagement depends on the client and the condition(s) for which they are seeking support. Engagement can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks to several years.

Will I still be able to take my medications while engaged in yoga therapy?

Yes. I will always advise you to follow your medical provider’s recommendations on medications and dosage.

Can yoga therapy help with acute conditions (ie conditions which develop rapidly and linger for a short amount of time)?

No. Yoga therapy is ideal for conditions which have persisted for a significant amount of time.
